Semester Credits Course
Description:
A study/service internship is a planned, supervised course integrating
academic and practical work that is undertaken for the specific
purpose of acquiring and applying knowledge through direct experience
in a field related to the student's educational program. Credit
is not given for "on-the-job work" only; rather the intent
of the internship is to integrate on-site learning and work with
the theory of a related discipline.
The
study/service internship class of the Spring Term in Thailand program
combines an enriched learning experience through immersion in a
local Thai culture with the singular opportunity to make a direct
contribution to the Chiang Mai community through a service project
monitored by the internship director (Professor Ann Leming). Through
a creative integration of service and study, student-participants
earn four semester credits. 
Academic
Requirements :
To assure that the internship is credit-worthy, students will visit
a number of institutions of social service (church-related associations,
social services agencies, medical, academic institutions, and non-government
organizations (NGOs) during the first two weeks of the Spring Term
in Thailand. With the assistance of the internship coordinator (Professor
Ann Leming), the student will develop an internship with appropriateness
to the student's general academic and vocational interests and formulate
an educational project plan for the internship. Because it is especially
important that systematic and regular reporting be done by the student
to both the field and faculty supervisors, there will be a weekly
two-hour seminar lead by Professor Ann Leming where all students
will discuss and reflect upon the meaning of their study-service
program.
Regulations
Effecting Internship:
1. Credit for an internship experience is
granted only when the internship is guided by an approved project
plan and supervised by the internship director and an on-sight supervisor.
Students, on-sight supervisors, and internship director will sign
a contract before the commencement of the internship.

A designated faculty supervisor of the Spring Term in Thailand and
a supervisor within the host agency will supervise each student-intern.
Formal communications will take place weekly between the
faculty member, the student, and the supervisor in the host agency.

Each internship will have both a practical work experiences within
the host agency and supplemental academic work assigned by the faculty
supervisor to help guide the student in the application of theory
to the analysis of the internship experience. Students are required
to put in a minimum of 100 hours of service (approximately 4 hours
per day four times per week) and attend an internship seminar held
every Friday at 10:00 AM for two hours.

Internship forms and applications are available from the internship
director. Several signatures are required, and the completed forms
must be returned to Professor Ann Leming before the student is placed
in the agency. Only after the application is approved can the student
participate for the internship. Questions about internships may
be directed to the director of internships (Professor Ann Leming),
who must sign the application. Evaluation
and Grading:
The internship director and an on-sight agency supervisor will conduct
evaluation of the study/service internship course. Credit for the
internship is offered on Pass/Not Pass only. |
